Things you may never know (unless you read this post)

You don't see this covered in the media do you?

First off, I would like to publicly apologize to everyone for yesterday’s post. Why I thought Hugh Hefner would be a good topic for discussion is beyond me. It was by far my worst post yet. I am going to blame my lack of judgment on the fact that I hadn’t yet had enough coffee. And I hadn’t had much to eat either. So…yep, that explains it. And honestly…Ecarg?? Totally a fake. I looked it up and…Loveshack University doesn’t even EXIST!!!! But rest assured, a pointless post such as yesterday’s will never happen again.

For today I am well fed and my body is pumping with caffeine. I shall not let you down.

Now, let’s get right to it.

Many of us think that plopping our booties on the couch and watching an hour or so of broadcast news will magically turn us into well-informed people. Well NEWS FLASH (haha…it’s funny cause I’m talking about the news. haha…nvm): there is SO MUCH that the news doesn’t cover. You see, big news stations decide for us what is important and what is not (and they get a little swayed by the government. And when I say a little, I actually mean a lot). Here is an article that someone showed me listing 12 major events that occurred recently that have strangely been left out of mainstream media.

I highly encourage you to read through the whole article, but below are a few:

  • “Most Americans are aware that the U.S. is involved in wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya.  However, the truth is that the U.S. military is also regularly bombing Yemen and parts of Pakistan.  If you count the countries where the U.S. has special forces and/or covert operatives on the ground, the U.S. is probably “active” in more countries in the Middle East than it is not.  Now there are even persistent rumors that U.S. ground units are being prepared to go into Libya.  Are we watching the early stages of World War 3 unfold before our eyes in slow motion?”
  • “Members of Congress continue to mention Christians as a threat to national security.  For example, during a recent Congressional hearing U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee warned that “Christian militants” might try to “bring down the country” and that such groups need to be investigated”
  • “All over the world, huge cracks are appearing for no discernible reason.  For example, a massive crack that is approximately 3 kilometers long recent appeared in southern Peru.  Also, a 500 foot long crack suddenly appeared recently in the state of Michigan.  When you also throw in all of the gigantic sinkholes that have been opening all over the world, it is easy to conclude that the planet is becoming very unstable”
  • “There are reports that North Korea has tested a “super EMP weapon” which would be capable of taking out most of the U.S. power grid in a single shot.  The North Koreans are apparently about to conduct another nuclear test and that has some Obama administration officials very concerned”

So why aren’t these issues (and the 8 others) being reported in the mainstream media? I certainly don’t have the answer to that. But I do know it’s a problem. I think this proves the point that watching CNN or MSNBC or FOX is just not enough if we care at all about knowing what goes on in our own world. Knowledge is power. It’s cliche, but true. Dig deep into news sources that report on a broad range of topics and events, instead of relying on news outlets that report endlessly on the same things.

When CNN spent MONTHS covering Michael Jackson’s death, imagine how much was going on in the world during that time that we didn’t hear about. Don’t get me wrong…poor Mike deserved media attention. But NOT that much.

Take a look at this clip from the documentary “Peace, Propaganda, and the Promised Land”. It talks about how the US media paints Israel in a good light and Palestinians in a bad light because of the fact that Israel is our ally. It’s quite sad, actually, that we are getting such a skewed portrait of the conflict over there:

All this leaves me with the question, is the nature of mainstream media coverage a CAUSE of our ignorance or a RESULT of it (as in the media only reports what it thinks Americans want to hear)? What do you think?
